"Blessed is the man who perseveres (or endures) under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him." James 1:2
I’ve only been back in the state for a few hours and I have already sensed a great depression seeping into the lives of many Sooner fans after the disappointing showing at the Fiesta Bowl. So in the spirit of bringing encouragement and hope I’ve decided to list a few thoughts on how to overcome depression.
Many people in today’s society find themselves battling depression. It is a reality. In fact, in a recent Comorbidity Survey, about 14 million Americans had a serious depressive episode in the previous year; while more than 16 percent (about 35 million) experienced such depression over their lifetimes. In the first Comorbidity survey 10 years earlier, this figure was less than 15 percent.
Here are a few thoughts on how to effectively overcome depression.
1. Remind yourself that Jesus is the Hope of the World.
Peter 1:3 “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,” – (ESV)
2 Thessalonians 2:16 “God our Father loved us and by his kindness gave us everlasting encouragement and good hope. Together with our Lord Jesus Christ,” – (God’s Word)
2. Shift your focus away from your problems and onto Jesus.
Psalm 42:11 “Why are you down in the dumps, dear soul? Why are you crying the blues? Fix my eyes on God - soon I'll be praising again. He puts a smile on my face. He's my God.” (God’s Word)
3. Remember that Jesus loves you.
Psalm 42:8 “By day the LORD commands his steadfast love, and at night his song is with me, a prayer to the God of my life.” (ESV)
Psalm 34:18 "The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit. (19) Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the LORD delivers him out of them all." (ESV)

I have found that problems such as depression often stem from selfishness. When disapointing things come your way, you must make a choice to rise above and realize that God is your source of peace and comfort, or to wallow in self pitty, sinking into depression. I'm not saying that it is always easy, and I'll give anyone ONE day of feeling sorry for themselves. Then you must choose to win over depression by shaking off selfishness and self pitty by reading God's word and praying His promises. One key when disapointment comes is to find some one to help. When we meet the needs of others, God will meet our needs. In the words of Sheila Walsh: Life is hard, but God is Faithful!!
hi Sherri-- I would just like to say I'm in the midst of a deep depression right now. Please don't ever tell someone who is depressed that they are being selfish. Please.
Only encourage. Lower yourself down to where they are. Please. thank you.
